Introduction to Danggogae Martyrs' Shrine

Danggogae Martyrs’ Shrine is located on a small hill just a 5-minute walk from Yongsan Electronics Market.
It is a sacred place that produced nine saints and one beatified person, and is the place where ten men and women were martyred in 1839 at the end of the Gihae Persecution.
They were originally scheduled to be executed at the intersection outside Seosomun, but since merchants outside Seosomun needed to see Daemokjang, they requested that the execution be moved to another location, so they were moved to Danggogae here and executed to honor the martyrs.
The Danggogae Martyrs' Shrine was created with the theme of [The Pain of Wild Briars and the Scent of Plum Blossoms], expressing the pain of persecution through the thorns of wild roses and the grace of God through the scent of plum blossoms.
The 14 Stations of the Cross at Danggogae Shrine consist of Blessed Mary Lee Seong-rye following the path of Jesus, allowing visitors to experience the path of suffering and the glory of martyrdom.

Former Yongsan Theological Seminary and Wonhyo-ro Sacred Heart of Jesus Cathedral

Introduction to the old Yongsan Theological Seminary and Wonhyo-ro Sacred Heart of Jesus Cathedral

Yongsan Theological Seminary was built in 1892, and Wonhyo-ro Cathedral of the Sacred Heart of Jesus was built in 1902, and both buildings were designed and supervised by French Father Cost.
Yongsan Theological Seminary is a brick building with one floor semi-basement and two floors above ground, and is the first seminary building in Korea. It has an entrance and basement entrance in the center, and stairs leading to the first floor entrance on the left and right.
Yongsan Theological Seminary moved to Hyehwa-dong, and the Yongsan Theological Seminary building was used as a branch of St. Mary's Hospital, and is now used by the Sacred Heart Society as a convent. Although some of the original buildings were expanded, most of them retain their original appearance.
Because the Wonhyo-ro Sacred Heart of Jesus Cathedral was built on a hill, the southern hillside has three floors and the convent side has two floors.
The main entrance is not in the center, but rather to one side, creating an asymmetrical appearance.
The interior of the building is a simple church with only an altar and pews, but the pointed arch windows and small spire on the roof give it an overall abbreviated Gothic appearance.
