Daegu Dodong Arborvitae Forest

Introduction to Daegu Dodong Cypress Forest

It is a colony of thousands of arborvitae trees growing naturally on a rocky cliff 10m high and 60m long.
Dodong's arborvitae forest is Korea's No. 1 natural monument.
Although the cultural heritage designation number was abolished by the Cultural Heritage Administration's notice in November 2011, the reason why the arborvitae forest here is symbolically designated as Natural Monument No. 1 is because this tree is very important botanically as it indicates the southern limit.
The arborvitae tree that lives in Hyangsan Mountain in Dodong lives in the crevices of rocks, and when you look at it up close, it is so fragile that it is sad to see it survive.
Looking at the arborvitae trees in Dodong, you can see that these trees grow well even in barren places.
According to the 2016 survey, the total number of trees in the Dodong Cypress Forest was 1,423, including 1,232 adult trees and 191 small trees.
This is the first time that an accurate count has been identified through a complete survey.
Since 2007, a prayer service has been held every year in Dodong to protect the arborvitae forest, and at the 2018 prayer service, members of the Daegu City Intangible Cultural Heritage Gongsan Farm Song Preservation Society performed.
Gwaneumsa Temple, located adjacent to the arborvitae forest, and the Yeonriji trees formed by the locust and zelkova trees, which are protected trees of the nearby Arborvitae Culture Village, also add a sense of mystery just like the arborvitae trees, so they are good to visit together.

Introduction to Donghwasa Temple (Daegu)

Donghwasa Temple is a historic Silla temple and is located in the Donghak-dong valley, surrounded by Palgongsan Mountain's Waterfall Valley, Bindaegol, and Susutgol on both sides.
This is the headquarters of the 9th Diocese of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism.
In 493 (the 15th year of King Soji's reign), a theater company was founded and called Yugasa Temple.
Afterwards, in 832 (the 7th year of King Heungdeok's reign), Wangsa Temple was rebuilt, and although it was winter at that time, paulownia trees were in full bloom around the temple, so it was renamed Donghwasa Temple.
Most of the existing temples were built during the reconstruction period during the reign of King Yeongjo, including Daeungjeon, Yeongyeongjeon, Cheontaegak, Yeongsanjeon, Bongseoru, Simgeomdang, Chilseonggak, Sansingak, Eunghyangak, Woneumgak, and Tiananmen.
Additionally, the annexed hermitages include Geumdangam, Biroam, Naewonam, Budoam, Yangjinam, and Yeombulam.

Apostate Temple

Introduction to Pagyesa Temple

Pagyesa Temple, located within Palgongsan Mountain Natural Park, is a subsidiary temple of Donghwasa Temple, the headquarters of the 9th Diocese of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism. The area is surrounded by dense forests and clear valleys, forming a fairyland, making you feel as if you have escaped the world.
According to historical records, it was founded by Simjiwangsa in the 5th year of King Aejang's reign (804), rebuilt by Gye-gwan in the 38th year of King Seonjo's reign (1605), and sung three times by Hyeon-eung in the 21st year of King Sukjong's reign (1695).
Pagyesa Temple has a deep connection with King Yeongjo of the Joseon Dynasty.
King Sukjong had a dream of a monk entering the palace. In the dream, he found the monk outside Namdaemun, and it turned out to be Yeongwon Seonsa. He asked him to pray for the birth of a prince. After some time, Sukbin Choi had a fetus and a prince was born, the future King Yeongjo.
King Sukjong was delighted and gave the monk the title of Hyeon-eung.
At that time, the tyranny of Confucian scholars was severe at Pagyesa Temple, and it is said that Hyeon-eung showed wisdom in stopping the tyranny of Confucian scholars by asking Sukjong to enshrine the royal tablet.
Even now, the Hama Monument still exists at Pagyesa Temple, and the monument and stupa of Master Hyeoneung, as well as the robe of King Yeongjo the Great, are kept there.
In June 1979, when the statue of Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara was opened in the shrine of Pagyesa Temple, the meaning of King Yeongjo was revealed inside the statue, attracting the attention of academia and adding credibility to the tale.
Among the existing temples, there are four elegant buildings, centered around Wontongjeon, including Jindonru, Seolseondang, and Jeokmukdang, forming a [ㅁ] shape.
Wontongjeon has a seated statue of Bodhisattva Wooden Avalokitesvara enshrined in its central hall.
Giyeonggak behind Wontongjeon is a building designated as a cultural property of Daegu Metropolitan City in 1984. It was called Eopilgak because it stored the appeals of the three kings, Sukjong, Yeongjo, and King Jeongjo, but the appeals are no longer available.
In addition, this temple has Yeongsanhoesangdo (treasure) and ancient documents related to the royal garden (Daegu Metropolitan City tangible cultural assets), and there is a 2m-high octagonal stone lantern in front of the temple, two folding screens and two beads that were gifts from King Sukjong, and on the west side of the temple. There are stupas and monuments of three great masters, including Hyeon-eung, erected here.
Affiliated hermitages include Hyeonniam, Geumdangam, Seongjeonam, and Chilseongam.
Among these, there is a portrait of Hyeon-eung and a mural at Seonjeongam, which appears to be from the Joseon Dynasty.
As its name suggests, meaning that it gathers waterways that are scattered in various branches, Pagyesa Temple is a temple so beautiful that even Palgongsan Mountain Natural Park boasts of its clear valley. It is a temple where you can seek the comfort of nature and seek the peace of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva.

Introduction to the ancient tombs in Bulo-dong, Daegu

Among the ancient tombs, the Bulo-dong Ancient Tombs, the first in the country to be designated as a cultural asset, consists of about 200 large and small tombs.
It borders the Geumho River basin and is distributed in the eastern hills of the point where the road from Bullo-dong to Palgongsan meets the Gyeongbu Expressway.
The diameter of the tomb is usually 15 to 20 m and the height is 4 to 7 m. The internal structure consists of four walls made of raw or broken stones, a rectangular stone room covered with a flat, wide stone, and gravel placed on top of the tomb and covered with soil. Yes.
There are many excavated grave goods, including gold or gilt-bronze accessories and pottery with engraved patterns of iron weapons.
These tombs are generally believed to have been built around the 5th century during the Three Kingdoms period, and are presumed to be mass graves of the indigenous ruling powers that ruled the area.
The Bulo-dong tomb group has the best external form among the extant tombs in the Daegu area, and the fact that many tombs are concentrated in a small area shows an aspect of ancient society. Similar power groups within the Daegu basin were Naedang-dong and Bisan-dong. It has value as material that disproves that it was living in various places, including Bulo-dong.
The fact that the Bulo-dong tombs are located on a hill, the interior of the tomb is made of broken stones similar to a stone mound tomb, and the stone chambers are extremely thin and long indicate that they are from the middle reaches of the Nakdong River.
However, the form and quality of the relics are similar to those of Silla, showing the complex cultural aspects of this regional power.

*About Gatbawi Rock*
Gatbawi is a 4m-tall gigantic circular statue created against the backdrop of a rock wall surrounding a folding screen on the peak of Mt. Palgongsan, 850m above sea level.
The head, which is topped with a hat-shaped natural flagstone about 15cm thick, has a distinct six-pointed body, and the shape of the two hands is similar to the Hangma Chokjiin (降魔觸地印) popular on 8th-century Buddhist statues such as Seokguram Grotto, the left hand. Judging by the fact that it is holding a small medicine pot, it is presumed to be a statue of a pharmacist.
The flowing lines of the flowing clothes, which adhere closely to the solemn face and huge physique, were engraved to form a suprahyeonseop (裳懸座), but tension and elasticity were somewhat excluded, making it a 9th-century model. It is considered one of the masterpieces representing the giant group of Buddha statues and has been designated as a treasure.
There is a legend that says, “If you pray with your intellect, your one wish will come true,” so people line up to pray from early in the morning, and it is especially crowded with people praying and watching the sunrise during entrance exam season and January 1st.
